The Montecristo name comes from the hero of Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read by the Lector to the Torcedores (cigar makers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935. Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Habanos throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Habanos smokers against which other brands are judged. Two lines make this brand pretentious, the classic line with letters and number vitolas, enriched with the addition of the Edmundo line in 2004, in recognition of the trend for heavy gauge sizes, 2009 saw the introduction of a new Series, Montecristo Open, blended to a lighter flavour than other sizes in Montecristo’s range and aimed at a new generation of smokers, who enjoy the pleasures of outdoor pursuits.
Punchy and at the same time full of delicate floral notes and hints of vanilla, the No.5 has an underlying bitterness which is pleasantly reminiscent of cedar wood, which gives depth to the smoke. Very similar to the Montecristo No.4, the No. 5 is more direct and will burn faster giving the impression that it is a stronger cigar. 20 minutes smoking time.
